A man walking through a a snow-covered forest found a snake that was stiffened with frost. Feeling compassion, he picked the snake up and warmed it in his bosom. However, when the snake had fully recovered, it turned around and bit the man, killing him. Another person who witnessed the incident asked the snake why it had killed the man after he had shown compassion. The snake answered, “So that people may learn not to help those who are wicked.”
