Zeno of Citium was once a wealthy merchant until a violent shipwreck destroyed everything he owned. Adrift and penniless, he wandered into a bookstore in Athens, searching for direction. There, he discovered philosophy. Something inside him stirred. He studied under great thinkers and eventually founded the Stoic school of thought.
Reflecting on his journey, Zeno said, “I made a prosperous voyage when I suffered a shipwreck.”
