A habit is something that happens automatically and without effort. For example, I don’t have to think about snacking when I am at home, watching a YouTube video when I am trying to get something done, or binge-watching a show on Netflix. Come to think of it, I don’t have a single truly automatic behavior that is actually good for me.
The fact is, all good habits require effort. It takes effort to sit down and meditate, to pause and think before responding to annoying emails, and to pull myself away from the lure of binge-watching.
Therefore, instead of relying on habits, I create rituals. The only way I can do something good is if I plan ahead so that I don’t have to spend effort deciding what I will do. This way, all my effort can go into the doing itself.
Paradoxically, I feel there are no good habits. There are only good rituals.
Simply put, this is my observation.
Habits(Not good for me)= Automatic Actions.
Rituals(Good for me) = Intentional Actions.
