We often allude to discipline as something special because it feels tough- We are doing the hard thing, pushing ourselves through the grind, and that feels heroic.
However, from experience, I realize that when you are fully engaged with what you are doing, it doesn’t feel like a slog that requires loads of discipline to persevere. When you are driven and deeply engaged, you can produce fantastic work. You are in a state of flow where nothing feels labored, even if it is incredibly tough.
In contrast, when something starts to feel like a slog, and you find yourself pushing every day—I have had periods of that—when that begins to happen for an extended period, it’s no longer about discipline. This feeling of work being a slog is a sign that perhaps it is time to change course and do something else.
Looking back, this is what prompted me to leave a bank and join a Fintech- I had reached a point where daily work felt like a slog !!
