Evening In Jakarta

evening in jakarta

I’m in Jakarta right now, and dinner ran long in the best possible way. I spent the evening with our Perfios team here — unhurried conversations, honest stories, lots of ideas. We spoke about ambition, purpose, careers, and what it really means to excel at anything.

Somewhere through that flow of ideas, one truth kept coming back: professional growth is always a lagging indicator of personal growth.

It reminded me of James Clear’s line in Atomic Habits: every outcome in life is a delayed reflection of the habits we practice. Our net worth is a lagging measure of our financial discipline. Our health is a lagging measure of our eating and fitness habits. Our competence at work is a lagging measure of what we consistently learn.

The same pattern holds for careers. Promotions, recognition, influence — they don’t show up first. The habits do. The growth happens quietly inside long before anyone outside can see it.

So the real question is simple: What habits are we choosing today that our future selves will thank us for?

A beautiful evening, great conversations, and a reminder that the inner game always decides the outer game.
