Art Of Influence
May 6, 2025
In a client meeting last month, a teammate gave in on a minor design detail the client felt strongly about. It wasn’t what we preferred, but it didn’t affect the overall outcome. The client appreciated the flexibility, and when a more critical ask came up later, they were far more open to our pushback.
That’s the art of influence. Knowing when to bend and when to hold your ground.
Not every hill is worth dying on. Most times, compromising on the small stuff shows you’re reasonable. It earns trust. And more importantly, it saves your leverage for moments when the stakes are real.
Standing firm on what truly matters is easier when people know you’re not rigid about everything else. By not sweating the small stuff, you build goodwill and save your influence for when it matters.
