Your Future Is In Your Daily Routines

When I was in my mid-twenties early in my career, One of my mentors said this to me ” Show me your daily schedule and what your common routines are, and I will tell you how your future will turn out.”
Let’s say you have this dream to be successful, wealthy, happy, healthy, fit, and have great relationships. This is the life you desire as your future. What are your daily routines and habits that are helping you get to your desired future?
- You don’t have a daily routine of exercising and have a habit of eating junk food. How will this get you to your goal of being healthy and fit?
- You have a goal to deliver on all your work objectives. But, you don’t have a routine to contemplate and review your work goals every day. How can you excel at work?
Once in a while, doing something great will not help. Consistency is vital and what you do daily in terms of your routines is what matters. What you sow is what you reap.
If you have a fitness goal of losing 15Kg and being at your ideal weight, forget the goal!! Think of the daily routine or habit you need to have. It could be- Routine 1: “I’ll go to the gym and work out for 45 min every day.” Routine 2: “I will not eat junk food.”
If you have a goal of delivering on a sales target, forget the year-end target !! Think of what you will do daily. It could be- Routine 1: “Speak to at least three new contacts every day.” Routine 2: “Track all virtual events every day and participate in at least two virtual events for networking every week.”
If you have a Goal of Financial Independence, forget the pot of money you are looking to build in five years !! Think of what you should be doing with discipline today and every day. It could be- Habit 1: ” Control Impulsive expenditure” Habit 2: “Respect Time and value effort. Bring discipline into everything you do.”
Your daily habits and routines are the doorway to your dreams and goals. Your future may not be in your control but what you do today is undoubtedly in your control. Where you are today is a consequence of what you have done until yesterday. Where you will go in your future is determined by what you will do today, tomorrow, the day after, and the day after….
Your habits are your daily actions to manifest your goals. You must have the right daily routines. This is the life lesson my mentor gave me early in my career.
John Maxwell, one of my favorite leadership gurus, says it nicely in one of his Blogs-“You’ll never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.”
