Three Levels Of Trust

Three levels of trust

– I trust he will follow the rules.

– I trust her to do a good job.

– I trust her fully.

Although the term “trust” is used in each statement, the meaning is different in each scenario. Randy Conley’s excellent post on trust identifies three types of trust that we encounter in our daily lives:

Deterrence-based trust is built by creating rules and agreements that govern behavior, ensuring people can trust each other to act appropriately. This type of trust is established through various mechanisms, such as laws, contracts, and workplace policies. It is the most effective form of trust we rely on in our workplaces, particularly with the newer members.

Knowledge-based trust develops as we gain experience with someone and come to understand their behavior. We trust them in everyday interactions because they consistently act in our best interests. For example, if you are a leader, you let people in your charge operate independently when you establish knowledge-based trust.

Identity-based trust is the deepest level, in which we share our hopes, fears, and dreams with people we see as loyal. We become vulnerable and open ourselves fully to them, knowing they hold the power to harm our interests but confident that they won’t. This level of trust is typically reserved for close relationships like family, best friends, and colleagues with whom we share common values, aspirations, and dreams.

Consider your relationships in both your personal and professional life. What types of trust do you have with those around you? Take a moment to assess the trust levels in your important relationships. How can you deepen trust with those who matter most to you?
