Persist In The Face Of Rejection
September 25, 2023
In the past week, I’ve had two separate conversations with acquaintances disheartened by being overlooked for internal career opportunities within their organizations. Frustrated and feeling undervalued, they reached out to me in seek guidance.
My message to both of them was this: “Don’t let rejection be the reason to quit; NO is not a dead end.”
In corporate settings, I often witness individuals making the common mistake of seeking promotion once or twice, facing rejection, and succumbing to discouragement. They lose their drive and ultimately quit.
Many tend to attribute their setbacks to the perceived unfairness of their workplace, and many even build this moral high ground, claiming they won’t engage in what they see as necessary political maneuvering. However, what truly holds them back is not the environment but their response to rejection—they allow it to discourage them to the point of giving up.
I left both my friends with this parting thought: “If you’re not willing to persist, you are the one creating an obstacle to your own success.”
