Weekend Story- Abraham Lincoln’s Wit

Abraham Lincoln

President Abraham Lincoln was once criticized for referring to the Confederates in kind terms.

A woman critic asked the President how he could speak generously of his enemies, particularly when they were trying to destroy him.

“Should you also not be aggressively looking to destroy them instead?” she asked.

“Why, Madam,” replied Lincoln wittily, “Do I not destroy them when I make them my friends?”

(Confederates were representatives of the 11 slave states in the US that rebelled against Abraham Lincoln when he became President)
