Weekend Story-Fresh Fish

The Japanese have always loved fresh fish, but the waters close to Japan have long been overfished.

To feed the population, fishing boats had to venture farther out to sea. The longer journeys meant that by the time they returned, the fish had lost their freshness. To solve this, fishing companies installed freezers on their boats, allowing them to go farther and stay out longer. However, frozen fish didn’t taste the same, and the Japanese quickly noticed the difference. Frozen fish fetched a lower price, so they tried a new approach: fish tanks on the boats, where live fish could be stored until the trip home.

But even in the tanks, after a little thrashing around, the fish grew tired and dull, losing their “fresh fish” taste. The industry faced a real crisis.

So, how did they solve it?

The fishing companies started putting a small shark in each tank. With the shark around, the fish had to stay alert, constantly swimming to avoid becoming prey. Some didn’t survive, but the ones that did arrived as fresh and lively as ever.

The challenge kept them alive— and fresh.
