Assume Misunderstanding
August 22, 2026
Someone does not respond the way you expected. A colleague leaves you out. A customer goes quiet. A friend says something that feels dismissive.
Our mind is quick to build a story around it.
They do not respect me. They are avoiding me. They do not care.
Sometimes that story may be true.
But often, the simpler explanation is that the other person did not know what you expected, was dealing with something of their own, or simply misunderstood.
Experience has taught me that it is better to seek clarity before forming a judgment or a grievance.
Ask. Explain. Give the other person a chance to respond.
Many relationships are damaged not by what actually happened, but by the meaning we quietly attach to it.
A simple operating principle I recommend to everyone.
Assume misunderstanding first.
Then have the conversation.
