Helping folks with practical tips to manage themselves better

It’s Always The Question That Enlightens

question that enlightens

It is not the answer that enlightens, but the question.

The right question can change everything. It shifts perspective, clears the fog, and brings clarity where there is none. But too often, we’re in a hurry to fix things, focusing on answers without asking if we’re solving the right problem in the first place.

Take a typical workplace scenario. A sales team is falling short of its targets. The usual knee-jerk reaction is, “Why aren’t we selling more?” But this question often leads nowhere productive. What you get is excuses and reasons—it’s the market, the competition, or pricing. Instead, what if you asked, “What’s holding our best-performing salespeople back from closing more deals?” Or “What can we do to improve the momentum?” These questions force a closer look at what’s within your control and guide you toward practical changes.

Another example. Imagine there is tension between a team lead and a direct report. The easy question is, “Why can’t they get along?” But this usually leaves the issue unresolved, or worse, puts blame on one side. A better approach would be to ask, “Are there unspoken expectations between them?” or “How do their work styles differ, and how can those be bridged?” It might just be that the manager prefers detailed progress updates, while the employee thrives on autonomy. The right question can pave the way for a solution that improves understanding and collaboration.

Bottomline: Before rushing to find answers, invest time in crafting and asking better questions. The right question doesn’t just solve problems; it lights up the path forward.
