The Discomfort Before Growth

discomfort before growth

Every new skill comes with an awkward season. You feel clumsy. You get things wrong. You wonder if you even belong in the room.

Most of us try to dodge that stage—we don’t want to look incompetent, we don’t want to feel like impostors. But that’s the “toll” at the gate of growth. You pay it, or you don’t get in.

Paradoxically, the more senior and experienced you are, the harder it gets. Years of expertise can trick you into believing you should already know. Which is exactly why many leaders stall—they avoid the discomfort that once fueled their rise.

Learning isn’t about being instantly good. It’s about being okay with looking bad for a while—trusting that the person you’re becoming will make the discomfort worthwhile.

Skip this stage, and you never really start.
