DIKW Framework- Difference Between Data,Information, Knowledge and Wisdom
December 27, 2023
In the hyper-connected world we live in today, data and Information are abundant and available on demand. However, we must all remember that data is not Information, Information is not Knowledge, and Knowledge is not Wisdom.
What then is the relationship between Data, Information, Knowledge, and Wisdom?
In the realm of data management, there is an interesting model called the DIKW Framework, which presents a hierarchy for Data, Information, Knowledge, and Wisdom. This model offers a roadmap for transforming raw facts into insightful decision-making.

At the pyramid’s base, Data forms the bedrock – raw, unprocessed facts awaiting interpretation.
As we ascend, data evolves into Information when organized and contextualized.
At the next level, Knowledge emerges when the Information is analyzed and interpreted using our skills, experiences, values, and contextual understanding of any situation. Our Knowledge is the foundation that helps us operate decision-making models to address situations and contextual challenges. Our Knowledge equips us with the “How” to deal with situations.
At the top, Wisdom crowns the pyramid, marking the application of Knowledge to make sound decisions. Wisdom is that highest state where all the Knowledge is in service of a bigger purpose. Wisdom is the application of Knowledge in actions we take. Wisdom is that intuitive capability we build over time to do the right thing at the right time for the right reasons. Our Wisdom is in knowing the “Why” we do something.
In summary, Information represents the “What,” while Knowledge looks at procedures, methods, and application- the “How” and Wisdom clarifies the purpose– the “Why”. Methods are only useful when the purpose is clear. Putting it differently, Knowledge becomes potent when paired with Wisdom.
