Nine Facets Of Effective Communicators
January 11, 2024
“Work or improve on your communication skills.”
It’s a piece of advice we’ve all either given or received at some point.
But what does being good in communication mean?
The simplistic assumption is that one has to be good at speaking and conveying some message that needs to be conveyed.
In my book, good communication is more than just eloquence; it’s actually a multifaceted skill set.
Active Listening: Communication is a two-way street. It’s about not just speaking but also being good at listening, and understanding the words of others.
Empathy: Step into someone else’s shoes. When you do that, you build connections effortlessly, often without saying much. Empathy is a silent yet powerful communicator.
Asking the Right Questions: Curiosity fuels good communication. Asking the right questions demonstrates your interest and deepens the quality of conversation. It’s a fundamental aspect of being an effective communicator.
Providing Feedback: Effective communication involves expressing viewpoints clearly and constructively. Giving feedback is an essential part of the process.
Providing Encouragement: A good communicator knows how to inspire and uplift others. Offering encouragement in a great way to do this.
Inspiring Trust: Beyond transactional conversations, effective communication builds connections based on trust. Trust is the bedrock of meaningful communication.
Being Quiet: Communication isn’t always about talking. Sometimes, silence speaks volumes. Knowing when not to say something is also a dimension of effective communication.
Being Direct: Cut to the chase. Conveying your thoughts directly and succinctly is a crucial facet of effective communication. Avoiding unnecessary long-winded messages ensures clarity.
Relating Experiences: Personalize your messages. Sharing your experiences makes you a relatable and powerful communicator. People connect more deeply when they can see themselves in your stories.
Incorporating these nine facets of capability into your overall communication model elevates your influence and amplifies your message.
