Managing Onself-Drucker Revisited
October 25, 2024
It’s been awhile since I wrote about this theme. Cultivating a deep understanding of yourself is key if you want to thrive in today’s fast paced world. Peter Drucker’s wisdom in his book Managing Oneself, written in 1999, remains completely relevant to this day. Here’s a set of questions that you need to keep asking and clarifying for yourself regularly, for they are the foundation for your personal effectiveness in whatever you do.
1. What are my strengths?
- Know yourself and identify your strengths.
- Focus on leveraging your strengths in your work.
- Acknowledge and manager your weaknesses. Don’t overfocus on them.
2. How do I perform best?
- Reflect on how you work most effectively: independently, in teams, or with clear guidance.
- Structure your work environment to match your natural working style.
3. What are my core values?
- Clarify your personal values and principles.
- Ensure your actions align with these values to stay motivated and true to yourself.
4. What are my top priorities?
- Determine which goals or tasks have the highest impact.
- Focus your efforts on achieving these, rather than dispersing your energy.
5. How can I improve my relationships?
- Take responsibility for building strong relationships.
- Understand the strengths, values, and working styles of those you work with to foster collaboration.
6. What’s my plan for the future?
- Consider your career trajectory in light of your strengths, values, and aspirations.
- Stay open to opportunities that align with your long-term goals.
7. Am I using my time wisely?
- Regularly review how you spend your time and cut out low-value activities.
- Prioritize tasks that bring the greatest value, treating time as a critical resource.
