Helping folks with practical tips to manage themselves better

Fulfil These Four Human Needs

four human needs

If you’re in any leadership or managerial role, remember that you must fulfill four basic human needs for those under your guidance if you want to bring out their best.

  1. The Need for Trust: No team member will give you their best if they don’t believe you have their best interests in mind. Without trust, they’ll shy away from taking risks or making themselves vulnerable. Your team expects you to deliver on promises, communicate openly and honestly, invest in them, and treat them fairly. Fail to do this, and you’ll find dissonance and distance taking root.
  2. The Need to Have Hope: Your team needs to believe that their efforts will lead to growth, skill development, and opportunities for career advancement. As a leader, it’s your job to cultivate this hope. Show them that their hard work opens doors. Neglect this, and you’ll encounter cynicism and resistance.
  3. The Need to Feel a Sense of Worth: Every team member wants to feel that their work matters—that if they put in the effort, their contributions will be seen, valued, and rewarded. You nurture their confidence and commitment by recognizing their hard work and meaningful contributions. Ignore this need, and you’ll face apathy and reluctance.
  4. The Need to Feel Competent: Your team needs to be matched with roles that align their talents with meaningful challenges. If the work is too simple, they’ll become bored and disengaged. If it’s too difficult, they’ll feel discouraged. Finding that sweet spot, where they’re pushed just enough to grow, is essential. Miss this, and you’ll see a drop in interest and engagement.

Take care of these four basic needs, and you will have a rockstar team backing you.
