Weekend Story-Jensen Huang And The Gardener

Jensen Huang

In Kyoto, an elderly gardener devoted his life to tending an exquisite moss garden. Every day, with quiet patience, he meticulously cared for the delicate moss, using only simple tools-a bamboo tweezer and a small wicker basket.

One day, Jensen Huang, the founder of Nvidia, visited the garden with his family. Walking through, he noticed the gardener carefully plucking a few tiny strips of dead moss with his tweezer and placing them into his basket. The basket was nearly empty-only two or three small pieces of dead moss lay inside. The garden itself was pristine, almost flawless.

Curious, Jensen approached the gardener. “Your garden looks perfect. What are you doing so intently?”

The gardener looked up and replied with a gentle smile, “I am taking care of my garden.”

Jensen paused. The garden was vast, yet the gardener worked with a tiny tweezer and a small basket. It seemed impossible to maintain something so large with such simple tools.

“How long have you been working in this garden?” Jensen asked.

“All my life-over 40 years,” the elderly gardener replied with quiet pride. “This is my garden.”

Jensen admired the dedication but couldn’t help but wonder, “The garden is so big, and your tools are so small. How can you possibly take care of the whole thing?”

The gardener smiled, his eyes reflecting the wisdom of years. “I have plenty of time.”

Jensen stood there, taking in the moment. The gardener wasn’t rushing, nor was he overwhelmed. He simply focused on what needed to be done, one small task at a time.

As Jensen walked away, he realized the more profound lesson as a form of career advice- Great work isn’t about speed, or scale-it’s about steady, mindful work.
