Clarity Over Motivation
September 23, 2025
The other day, my son muttered, “I don’t feel like doing this work today.”
I almost laughed. How many times have I felt the same? My instinctive reply was, “Forget your feelings. If you know it has to be done, just do it.”
Talking to kids is tricky. You try to be helpful, but most advice sounds like background noise to them. I held back from giving any solicitous advice.
But his words got me thinking. We like to believe success comes from passion and motivation. But in truth, most days I operate with little of either.
What I rely on isn’t motivation—it’s clarity. Clarity about what I’m working toward, and the intention to make some progress today, no matter how small. That’s it.
And how does it play out? Some days, I run at 90% efficiency. Some days, 50%. On the very bad days, 10%. But the constant is this: I keep moving.
Motivation shows up when it wants to. Clarity and intent are what keep me going when it doesn’t.
