Focus Over Competence
March 20, 2026
What looks like a competence gap is often a focus gap.
Over the last few years, I’ve had the opportunity to observe several fintech founders up close. From the outside, it’s easy to assume their success comes from superior intelligence or exceptional skill.
Not true.
In reality, most of them are as ordinary as anyone else, with one important difference. Their focus.
They may take their time to think through a decision. They weigh options, debate internally, and arrive at a direction. But once that decision is made, there is no second-guessing. No distraction. No dilution.
They just execute.
And that execution is sharp, consistent, and relentless.
Many of them are not extraordinary in every dimension. But they are extraordinary in their ability to stay with what matters. That, I’ve realised, is their real edge.
Not competence.
But focus.
