Weekend Parable-Ten Rupees

Ten rupees

Meera pressed a ten-rupee note into the shopkeeper’s hand.

“Your cashier returned too much yesterday. This is not mine.”

Suresh stared at this widow in her white saree. “Keep it, madam. It’s nothing.”

“What is not mine honorably, I cannot keep,” she said quietly, and left.

Something shifted in Suresh. By afternoon, he was across the square, returning five hundred rupees to his wholesaler Prakash for a billing error he had stayed silent about.

Prakash dismissed it warmly. But that night, he could not sleep.

Seven years ago, his closest friend Mohan had lent him three lakh rupees on a handshake. Mohan died the next day. No paperwork. No witnesses. Prakash had buried the memory with his friend.

Suresh’s words would not leave him. What is not mine, I cannot keep.

The following morning, Prakash withdrew three lakh rupees and went to Mohan’s widow’s house in the lane behind the temple.

A woman in a white saree opened the door. She looked at him with calm, unhurried eyes, the kind that had clearly seen enough of life to be surprised by very little.

He told her everything and handed her the envelope.

Walking back, Prakash felt lighter than he had in years. He didn’t know what had finally moved him to do it.

Meera closed the door, held the envelope to her chest, and smiled.

She didn’t know either.
