A Tip To Avoid Emotional Blind Spots

Blind spot

There have been numerous occasions in my adult life when I have become emotionally invested in some decision, stubbornly clinging to the hope of a desired outcome even when the evidence suggests otherwise. Looking back, there are a few examples-

  • Holding on to a property or an equity instead of selling it at a high because of greed or
  • refusing to take the first step to repair a broken relationship or
  • Getting stuck with a boss because I couldn’t bring myself to say I wanted to move on.

Andy Grove of Intel fame once said, “People who have no emotional stake in a decision can see what needs to be done sooner.”

When I’m emotionally involved, it’s difficult to recognize the flaws in my thinking. We all have blind spots, and seeking advice from mentors or close friends becomes incredibly valuable. Their lack of emotional involvement lets them see the situation objectively, free from my biases and attachment to past decisions. Their detached perspective often leads to insightful advice. While I may not always agree, their clarity can be a wake-up call. Ultimately, considering their perspective alongside my own convictions helps me make the best decisions, even if it means stepping back from the status quo.
