Helping folks with practical tips to manage themselves better

The Meaning You Give

meaning you give

I was chatting with my niece this evening. She recently made the leap from employment to working for herself and is visibly happier, more energised, and more in control of her life.

When I asked her why, the answer was on predictable lines. Freedom, flexibility, the ability to choose how she spends her time. But what struck me was something she said almost in passing. How much she valued what her previous job had taught her. The discipline, the skills, the exposure. Things she now uses every single day to manage herself and her work.

She had taken something she walked away from and found new meaning in it.

Which got me thinking.

The events of your past are fixed. The meaning of your past is not.

Every experience you have had, the good, the difficult, the ones you wish had gone differently, sits permanently in your history. You cannot change what happened. But you have complete control over what it means to you.

And that meaning is everything. Because the influence of any experience in your life is determined entirely by the meaning you assign to it.

A difficult job becomes the school that prepared you. A painful relationship becomes the lesson that shaped you. A failure becomes the foundation you built on.

When you intentionally choose a more empowering meaning for your past, you enable yourself to take more positive and purposeful action in the present.

Your history is fixed. Your story is not.
