Weekend Story-The Rich Man’s Secret
October 27, 2024
Once, a wealthy merchant was known throughout the kingdom for his immense fortune. His home was like a museum filled with grand tapestries and rare artifacts from distant lands. Yet despite his wealth, the merchant felt a lingering emptiness, as though something crucial was missing. He was restless and dissatisfied; no matter how much he acquired, it never seemed enough.
One day, while traveling through a remote village, he heard about a revered monk known for his wisdom. The merchant set out to visit this monk, convinced he would finally uncover the secret to happiness.
After hours of climbing a steep mountain path, the merchant arrived at the monk’s simple hut. It was small and bare, with only a bed of straw, a wooden table, and a cup of tea resting upon it. The monk sat outside, gazing serenely at the mountains, his face calm and content.
The merchant, a little out of breath, greeted the monk and explained his quest. “I’ve accumulated all the wealth a man could want,” he confessed, “but I still feel empty. I was told you might know the secret to happiness.”
The monk listened patiently and then, with a smile, reached into his robe and pulled out a small, smooth stone. He handed it to the merchant and said, “This stone holds the answer you seek. It is priceless.”
The merchant stared at the stone, a little surprised by its simplicity.
“This?” he asked, a bit puzzled.
“Yes,” the monk replied. “Take it, and treasure it well. As long as you keep it, happiness will follow.”
Though skeptical, the merchant took the stone, thanked the monk, and left. He held the stone tightly on his journey back, feeling a bit lighter than before, curious about its power. When he reached home, he placed it in his finest display case, surrounded by his other treasures. Every day, he looked at the stone, marveling at its “priceless” value and feeling a sense of peace he hadn’t known before.
Months passed, and the merchant found himself more at ease, less frantic in his quest for more. He treasured the stone, believing in its magic. However, one day, as he rearranged his display case, the stone accidentally slipped from his fingers and fell to the floor. To his dismay, it broke in two, revealing nothing special inside—just an ordinary rock.
At first, the merchant was heartbroken. “How foolish I was,” he thought, “to believe in a mere stone.”
As he reflected more deeply, he realized that during those months, his happiness came not from the stone itself but from his belief that he already had what he needed. It was his perception, not the stone, that had brought him peace.
Smiling, he left his grand home and returned to the mountain to thank the monk. As he approached, he saw the monk watching him with the same calm smile.
“The stone wasn’t magic, was it?” the merchant asked with a wry grin.
The monk chuckled softly. “No, the stone was just a stone. But now you know: happiness is something you carry within.”
