The Foundational Virtue
March 13, 2025
While scrolling through my LinkedIn notifications this evening, I came across this powerful quote from Maya Angelou: “Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency. We can’t be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.”
This is so profound. We often think of kindness, honesty, or generosity as stand-alone traits. But without courage, they crumble under pressure. It’s easy to be honest when there’s nothing at stake. It’s easy to be kind when there’s no cost.
Real virtue shows up when it’s risky—when telling the truth might cost you, when standing up for someone makes you vulnerable.
Bottomline: Your courage is the foundation of all your virtues.
