“I was late because traffic was bad.”
No…..you were late because you didn’t plan for traffic.
I am sure we have all heard (or said) something like this at work.
Blaming the market for a bad investment.
Blaming the company for not upskilling you.
Blaming the system, the timing, the weather.
I have only one thing to say in the spirit of accountability. If it keeps happening, you’re the common factor.
Try this instead.
“I didn’t plan well. I’ll fix it next time.”
“I lost money—I need to learn before I invest again.”
“I wasn’t ready for that role. I will be next time.”
Ownership is power. And progress only happens when you are honest with yourself.
