Weekend Story: The Snake On The Path

snake on the path

A young monk was walking through a quiet forest path at dusk. The light was fading, and the trees cast long shadows across the trail.

Suddenly, he stopped.

A few feet ahead lay what looked like a snake, stretched across the path.

His heart began to pound. The forest was silent. The snake did not move, but the monk did not dare step forward. He stood there, mind racing, imagining the worst.

After several anxious minutes, another traveler approached from behind carrying a small oil lamp.

Seeing the monk frozen in place, the traveler raised the lamp and shone its light on the path.

Both of them looked down.

There was no snake.

Just a coiled rope that had fallen from a woodcutter’s bundle earlier that day.

The monk laughed at himself. For ten minutes, he had been afraid of something that never existed.

The traveler smiled and said gently, “Most snakes in life are like this rope. They live only in the dim light of our assumptions.”
