Helping folks with practical tips to manage themselves better

Permission Is A Crutch

permission is a crutch

A lot of people wait for permission far too often.
It feels responsible. It feels proper. It feels safe.

But often, asking for permission is less about protocol and more about self-protection. If the answer is no, we have someone to blame. We can tell ourselves, I wanted to do it, but they did not allow it. That way, the burden of initiative is no longer ours.

That is why permission can become a crutch.
Not always. Some things do need alignment. Some decisions do need approval. But in plenty of situations, people ask too early, too easily, and too often.

And the irony is, if they had simply used their judgment and gotten on with it, most of the time, nobody would have stopped them, and things would have moved ahead.

Sometimes seeking permission is just a neat way of avoiding accountability.

A lot of meaningful work happens when you stop waiting to be authorised and just get on with it.
