Weekend Story-The Monk’s Bowl

Monk's Bowl

He looked like any wandering monk: barefoot, quiet, carrying only a staff, a cloth bag, and a simple wooden bowl. He travelled from village to village asking for food, and in return, he offered a single clear truth about life. His words were few, but strangely unforgettable.

In time, even the queen heard of him and invited him to the palace. After he finished his meal, she asked, “Holy one, what is the truth of life?”

The monk replied, “Everything you cling to will one day leave you. The only true wealth is a mind that stays at peace.”

The queen felt lighter. Wanting to remember this moment, she asked for his wooden bowl. He handed it to her instantly. Moved by his simplicity, she gifted him a beautifully crafted golden bowl.

The monk accepted it without pride. To him, it was still just a bowl.

To the world, it looked like ego.

People whispered, “Look at him now, a monk walking around with gold.”

But he continued as he always had.

Soon, a feared bandit heard of the golden bowl and decided to steal it. One evening, the monk rested under a tree, a small lamp flickering beside him. The bandit hid in the shadows, waiting for him to sleep.

Before he could act, the monk picked up the golden bowl and threw it straight into the darkness — where it rolled and stopped at the bandit’s feet.

Stunned, the bandit stepped out. “Why did you throw away something so valuable?”

The monk said, “You were not at peace while waiting to steal it. And I was not at peace knowing you were there. Anything that disturbs my peace is too expensive to keep.”

The bandit fell to his knees. In that moment, a thief dropped his hunger for gold — and discovered a richer way to live.
