Helping folks with practical tips to manage themselves better

Engagement Is Earned

Engagement is earned

No one comes into a workplace as a blank slate.

Someone may come in curious, eager to contribute, and willing to take responsibility. Someone else may be more guarded. They do what is asked, avoid risk, and keep their expectations low.

It is tempting to call this attitude.

But attitude has a history.

Someone who has repeatedly been ignored, blamed, or disappointed may eventually learn that it is safer not to care too much. Someone who has been trusted and given room to contribute may learn to lean in.

We try to test for attitude when we hire. But interviews only show us a moment.

What happens next matters just as much.

The same person can thrive in one environment and slowly withdraw in another.

Which means attitude is not only something an employee brings to work.

It is also something the workplace shapes.

Give people trust, ownership and a sense that their contribution matters, and you often get more of them.

Ignore that, and disengagement may follow.

Sometimes the team is not the problem.

Sometimes it is just the mirror.
