Weekend Story-You Have To Give First
April 16, 2023

A man was once lost in the desert and dying of thirst. He stumbled on until he came to an abandoned house. There was a hand pump in the courtyard of the dilapidated, windowless, weather–beaten, deserted shack. Excited by the discovery, the man summoned some energy and began pumping furiously. But, alas-no water came from the borewell.
Frustrated, as he looked around, the man noticed a small jug with a cork at the top and a note on the side: “You have to prime the pump with water, my friend. P.S. And fill the jug again before you leave.”
The man pulled out the cork and saw the jug was full of water.
“Should I pour it down the pump? What if it didn’t work? All of the water would be gone. If I drink the water from the jug now, I will not die of thirst. Should I risk it and pour this valuable water down the rusty pump?” the thirsty man wondered momentarily.
But a voice in his head told him to do as the note instructed and take the risk.
Resisting the urge to drink the water in the jug, the man emptied the jug of water down the rusty pipe and furiously worked the hand pump up and down.
Sure enough, after a few anxious moments, water gushed out !! The man was ecstatic- he had all the water he needed.
After fully quenching his thirst, the man gratefully filled the pitcher again, corked it, and added his own words beneath the earlier instructions on the pitcher: “Believe me, it really works. Don’t be afraid- You have to give it all away before you can get anything back.”
