Weekend Story-The Stone Soup

The Stone Soup

Once upon a time, a traveler arrived in a small village carrying nothing more than a large cooking pot. He was tired and hungry, but he had no food to cook. As he walked through the village square, he came up with an idea to ease his hunger and bring the community together.

The traveler approached the villagers and announced that he would make “stone soup” for everyone to share. Intrigued by the idea, the villagers gathered around the traveler, curious about how he would make soup from a stone.

The traveler filled his pot with water from a nearby stream and placed it over a fire. Then, he dropped a large, clean stone into the pot, stirring it gently. As the water began to simmer, the traveler tasted it and exclaimed, “Ah, but this would be even better with a few vegetables!”

One of the villagers offered a few carrots from his garden, and another villager contributed some potatoes. Someone else added an onion, and soon, others joined in, bringing whatever vegetables and herbs they had available.

As the soup cooked, the aroma wafted through the village, enticing even more people to join the gathering. Before long, a hearty and delicious soup had formed, made from the simple stone and the contributions of the entire community.

The villagers marveled at the traveler’s ingenuity and the camaraderie that had blossomed from the shared experience. They sat together, enjoying the warm soup and each other’s company late into the evening.

The following day, the traveler bid farewell to the villagers, continuing his journey with a full stomach and a heart warmed by the memory of the stone soup.
