Efficiency Vs Effectiveness
September 20, 2024
In the week gone by, I have had the opportunity to shadow a few of my teammates on their daily routines, and we have had some very engaging conversations about how to operate productively. Like always, I gravitated to my pet theme of having clarity about everything we do- why, what, and how.
Nowadays, everyone seems to be busy robotically going about doing multiple tasks. Unfortunately, being busy and being productive are not the same thing.
Completing to-do’s without clarity is busy. Figuring out what tasks are essential and then putting your mental and execution focus entirely on accomplishing them is productive. It’s easy to be busy. It’s hard to be productive- that is the paradox.
The real “art” of productivity is less about improving efficiency and more about improving effectiveness, and this comes only from having clarity about what you will and will not do. All your time on unimportant things comes at the expense of the most important priorities.
Being productive is not about doing more; it’s about having clarity about the few things that truly matter and concentrating all your energy on accomplishing them.
If you are wondering how to operate with clarity, here are some earlier blogposts that share some actionable tips.
