It’s On You

One of my first bosses had a phrase he’d say every time I went to him with a complaint about someone on the team not supporting me: “It may be their fault, but it’s your problem.”
As a young and inexperienced executive, I hated hearing this. It felt like he had no empathy for what I was going through.
But over time, I realized the profound lesson he was trying to teach me. He was pushing me to take complete accountability for everything under my purview. If I truly owned a task, there would be no room for complaints or blame—it was on me to figure out a solution, no matter the circumstances.
That lesson has stayed with me ever since.
If you’re driving an agenda, it may be their fault, but it’s always your problem.
