When Changing Your Mind Feels Hard

change mind

This afternoon, my wife and I got into a heated argument. She had her point of view, I had mine, and both of us dug in deep. Classic deadlock.

A few hours later, I replayed the whole thing in my head and asked myself a simple question: What if her point of view is actually valid? That one question cracked open my tightly held position. As I looked at it again, it became clear—her perspective wasn’t just valid, it was actually better.

It made me think of this quote by JK Galbraith: “Faced with the choice between changing one’s mind and proving there’s no need to do so, almost everyone gets busy on the proof.”

We don’t like admitting we’re wrong, especially when it’s someone close to us. But real strength lies in updating our view when we see something we have not considered before.

Now, if only I could figure out how to retrace my steps in the argument with my wife without losing face 🙂.
