Envy Is A Mirror For Your Desires
August 29, 2025
Last weekend in Dubai, I bumped into an old colleague at the airport lounge. He’s now in a senior role at a large bank, and as we got talking, he asked me something pointed:
“How did you decide to walk away from the security of corporate life into something that, from the outside, looked risky? Where did that clarity come from?”
The truth is, my decision came from a conviction that I needed to challenge myself in a new arena before it was too late. But his question stayed with me—what about those who aren’t clear yet, who don’t know what they truly want?
An interesting thought struck me.
One way to uncover your true desires is to notice what makes you envious.
Envy feels uncomfortable, but it’s also revealing. When you catch yourself feeling jealous of someone else, it often points to a hidden ambition you haven’t yet given yourself permission to pursue.
So don’t dismiss envy. Pay attention to it. Ask: Why does this stir me? What’s the desire underneath?
Envy isn’t weakness. It’s a mirror for your desires—reflecting back to you the ambitions you’ve kept tucked away.
