Don’t Dig The Well When You Are Thirsty

Don't Dig The Well

Don’t dig the well when you are thirsty.

It’s something I often tell my kids when we speak about relationships and networking.

Most people reach out only when they need something: a job, an introduction, a favour. By then, it feels transactional, and others can sense it.

Real relationships are built when there is no agenda. You invest time because you enjoy the person, the conversation, the shared journey. And over time, that quiet investment becomes trust.

The same principle shows up everywhere in life.

Your future self is begging you to start now, before you are forced to.

Build relationships before you need help.

Create habits before life tests you.

Build your financial safety net before the downturn arrives.

Prepare when it feels unnecessary, because that is when preparation is most powerful.

When the moment of need finally comes, you won’t be scrambling to dig a well. You’ll simply draw water from one you built long ago.
