Good Choice, Bad Outcome

Good choice

We judge our choices by how they turn out.

If it worked, we call it a good decision. If it did not, we beat ourselves up for getting it wrong.

But that is the wrong way to keep score.

Just because something did not work does not mean it was the wrong choice. And just because something worked does not mean it was the right one.

A sound decision can still lead to a poor result because of things you could not have known or controlled. A careless decision can still work out because luck was on your side.

Most decisions are not made with certainty. They are made with incomplete information, changing conditions and a range of probabilities.

A good choice is one where the odds were in your favour when you made it, based on what you knew at the time.

The outcome is partly yours and partly chance.

You control the decision. You do not control the dice.

So the game is simple. Find situations where the probabilities favour you. Make the call. Take the shot. And do not let one bad outcome convince you that the decision was wrong.

Keep taking good shots. Over enough of them, the odds show up.
