Helping folks with practical tips to manage themselves better

The People Who Came

People Who came

For six months, we had been preparing for this day.

And today, it passed in a blur.

My son got married in an elaborate Vedic ceremony, surrounded by family, extended family, and some of our closest friends.

As parents of the groom, my wife and I were part of almost every ritual. We moved from one ceremony to the next, following instructions, sitting, standing, offering, receiving, blessing.

There was hardly a pause.

People I deeply love had traveled to be with us. Some from other cities. Some from other countries. Many had rearranged their lives to come.

And yet, on the day itself, I barely spoke to most of them.

For a while, that bothered me.

Had they eaten well? Were they comfortable? Did they enjoy themselves? Had I spent enough time with them?

I honestly do not know.

But tonight, as the day settles, I find myself thinking about something else.

They came.

Perhaps that was the real gift.

Not the minutes we spent together today, but the years of connection that made them want to be there.

A wedding gives you very little time with the people you invite. But it gives you something rarer.

For one brief day, it lets you see the shape of your life through the people who choose to show up for it.

Today passed too quickly.

But the people who came will stay with me.
