Note To Myself- Don’t Lower The Bar

don't lower the bar

I set out to build something innovative and significant. It has been harder than expected. Stakeholders want updates, and progress is slow. And I can feel the temptation to quietly lower the bar, to make the goal easier so that the story feels better.

I have seen this instinct whenever I am pursuing something meaningful ( and challenging)

When I began writing every day, it was tempting to skip a day and call consistency unnecessary. In business, when an ambitious idea meets resistance, it is easy to shrink the idea instead of solving what makes it difficult.

That is the real test of standards.

High standards do not mean I always perform at my best. I don’t.

They mean that when things get difficult, I refuse to lower the bar simply to feel better about where I am.

I may miss the standard. But I would rather miss it than lower it.
