Parachute Or Presentation?
August 13, 2026
A distinction worth carrying to work.
A parachute that works 99% of the time is not a good parachute. It is a death trap. That one percent failure is the only number that matters.
A presentation that is 99% polished is more than good enough. Nobody in the room will ever notice the rough edges as long as the message is clear.
Same 99%. Completely opposite impact.
Most of our work falls into one of these two categories, and the mistake is treating them the same way.
Some tasks are parachutes. The compliance filing. The financial model the board will act on. The security in your product. The contract clause. Here, the last one percent is everything. 99% is not good enough because the gap is fatal.
But most tasks are presentations. The internal deck. The first draft. The status email. Here, chasing perfection is a waste. 99%, often far less, does the job perfectly well, and the extra polish helps no one.
We burn ourselves out perfecting presentations when they only needed to be good enough. And sometimes we wave through parachutes with a hole in them, telling ourselves 99% is close enough.
An important skill… Knowing whether you are working on a parachute or a presentation.
