Weekend Story- Giving Your Best

Giving Your Best

A young teenager and his father came upon a fallen tree trunk blocking their path in the dappled sunlight of a park after a storm. The boy, eager to prove himself, took on the challenge his father offered. “Give it your best,” his father said with a smile. “I know it looks heavy, but I believe you can move it.”

The boy grabbed the fallen trunk and quickly realized it was heavy. He pushed, pulled, and even tried lifting, but the log remained stubbornly in place. Frustration flickered across his face, but he couldn’t give up easily. He repositioned himself, trying again from a different angle, yet the log wouldn’t budge. Dejected, he looked at his father.

Smiling, the father asked, “Son, I asked you to give it your best. Did you give your best?”

The boy, confused, thought back on his efforts. “Of course I did! You saw how hard I pushed!”

His father’s smile remained. “Are you absolutely sure you gave it your all?” he asked gently. “Remember, I asked you to move the tree and give it your best. You tried to move it alone but gave up when it didn’t work. What else could you have done?”

The boy frowned. “I don’t know,” he mumbled, the weight of his father’s words settling in.

“You forgot to ask for my help,” his father gently reminded, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. “Together, we could have moved it easily.”

A spark of profound understanding lit up the boy’s eyes. He hadn’t considered that asking for help could also be a way of giving his best effort. A radiant grin spread across his face, replacing the earlier frustration. At that moment, under the watchful eyes of the park trees, he learned a valuable lesson: sometimes, the greatest strength lies in knowing when you need help and asking for it.
