Helping folks with practical tips to manage themselves better

The Biggest Prison Has No Walls

The Biggest Prison

Before hitting the bed, you set the alarm for 6 a.m.

No one forced you. But you have decided on your own to start a morning routine.

The alarm rings.

Immediately, a negotiation begins.

“You slept late.”

“One more hour won’t matter.”

“You can always start tomorrow.”

Ten minutes later, you’re still in bed.

Nobody forced you.

Nobody stopped you.

So the question is… were you really free?

Most of us think freedom means being able to do whatever we want.

But that is not true.

Because if our own mind can repeatedly persuade us to act against what we ourselves decided was important, then who is really in control?

Think about it.

You decide to exercise, but you don’t.

You decide to stop scrolling, but keep scrolling.

You decide to eat healthy, but reach for the dessert.

You decide to have the difficult conversation, but postpone it again.

Each time, it feels like a choice.

But is it?

Or are we simply following the strongest feeling of the moment?

I’ve come to believe that the opposite of freedom isn’t being shackled.

It’s compulsion.

It’s living at the mercy of every impulse, craving, excuse and emotion that happens to show up.

Real freedom is something much rarer.

It is the ability to honour the decision you made yesterday, even when the person you wake up as today doesn’t feel like it.

Discipline isn’t punishment. Willpower isn’t suffering.

Both are just freedom. The freedom to choose your values over your moods.

Perhaps that’s why they say the mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master.

The goal isn’t to silence your mind.

It never will.

The goal is simply to stop giving it the final vote.

Because every time your mind talks you out of becoming the person you wanted to be, you surrender a little of your freedom.

And every time you keep the promise you made to yourself, no matter how small, you reclaim it.
