Accountability-It’s All On You
August 26, 2024
Last week, while traveling to Hong Kong, I had some deep discussions with a teammate about personal productivity and leadership. A key takeaway was the power of accountability.
To lead effectively starts with how you see yourself. Are you a follower, or are you truly in charge?
When you are fully in charge, everything is on you—no excuses, no blame.
Think of yourself as a parent responsible for a child. A parent doesn’t shift blame when things go wrong; they take full responsibility for the family’s well-being.
In any role where you’re responsible, treat the outcomes like your own child. When challenges come up, do whatever it takes to handle them, just as a parent would. Blaming others weakens your position and admits you are not in control. Pointing fingers only hands over your power and makes you a victim.
Blaming is easy; accountability is hard.
Instead of pointing fingers, turn the focus inward. Ask, “What could I have done differently?” Maybe it’s, “I need to set a better framework to work with James next time,” or “If I’d been more upfront with the client, this could’ve been avoided.”
For real results and real change, start by holding yourself accountable. Acknowledge that it’s all on you, ask what you can do differently, and then take action.
