Don’t Negotiate With Yourself
November 17, 2024
I was recently talking to a friend very successful in a technology sales business to understand the secret to the success he was enjoying. He told me, “The person who carefully designs their daily routine goes further than the person who negotiates with themselves every day. “
He spoke about his daily routine. Every morning, without fail, he blocks the first two hours of his day for outreach—calls, follow-ups, and prospecting. It’s non-negotiable. No emails, no meetings, no distractions. This routine ensures he gets the most critical part of his job done before the day spirals into chaos. That discipline is why he consistently outperforms others.
If there is one valuable skill you can develop, it would be to do things even when you don’t feel like doing them.
Many of us get stuck negotiating with ourselves. A little voice in our head says, “I don’t feel like doing this right now; let’s do it later.” The minute we entertain that thought, it’s over.”
The lesson is simple: to achieve success, design your day. Commit to the work. And don’t negotiate with yourself- As Kobe Bryant famously advised.
