Tyranny Of The HOW

Tyranny of how

Imagine you have an opportunity to do something new—something you have never done before. You get all excited about this bold, meaningful goal. But then your brain goes, “How do I do it?” And just like that, you stall.

Tony Robbins calls this the tyranny of the HOW.

When you approach something new by asking how, you activate fear. Your brain kicks into overthinking mode: “I’ve never done this. I don’t know what to do. What if I fail?” And you talk yourself out of it before even starting.

There is nothing unique about this phenomenon. Most of us don’t know how when we begin-and that is okay. What matters is knowing what you want and why it matters. A strong why fuels the courage to start and the persistence to keep going.

Whenever I pursue a big goal, I make it a point never to start with how. I start by trying something, then testing, learning, and adjusting as I go. If it doesn’t work, I try something else. I keep moving, and through the process, I figure out the how.

Bottom line: The path unfolds only after you commit, not before. Always start with what and why-and trust that the how will follow organically.
