Seeing Clearly
May 10, 2025
I came across this quote by philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurthy in James Clear’s Blog this evening: “The ability to observe without evaluating is the highest form of intelligence.”
It is such a profound message.
In today’s world, where everything from a tweet to a news headline invites instant judgment, we have forgotten how to simply see. We label, categorize, and react instinctively.
Someone disagrees? We assume they’re misinformed.
A colleague is quiet in a meeting? We decide they’re disengaged.
But true intelligence lies in holding back that reflex.
When we observe without jumping to conclusions, we create space.
Space for understanding, for listening, for noticing what lies below the surface.
In leadership, parenting, and politics, this ability to pause and see what is before deciding what it means is a rare strength. It allows us to respond, not react. It allows us to think clearly.
Try it. The next time you are tempted to judge, just observe instead.
You might be surprised by what you actually see.
