Preparation Beats Planning
October 4, 2025
Here is one common theme around which my wife and I often clash. She likes to plan for everything. I, on the other hand, don’t plan much beyond setting goals. And this causes a lot of stress.
Why do I dislike planning?
Because so much of what happens around us is outside our control. To me, planning often feels overrated. A better approach is preparation.
Planning is built on the assumption of order. You expect events to unfold in a certain way, and you organize yourself around that expectation. But when chaos strikes, even the best-laid plans collapse.
Preparation, on the other hand, starts with the assumption of chaos. You expect the unexpected. You build resilience, flexibility, and readiness into how you operate. And when the world throws surprises, you don’t just survive—you adapt and thrive.
In a stable world, planning works. But in a VUCA world—volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous—preparation beats planning every time.
