Creation And Synthesis
March 12, 2026
We often celebrate originality as the ability to create something entirely new. A fresh idea. A blank sheet turned into something that did not exist before.
But another form of originality receives far less attention. Synthesis.
Synthesis is the ability to take ideas that already exist, often in completely different contexts, and connect them in a way that creates new value.
Innovation, in many cases, is nothing more than this act of connection. Seeing patterns others overlook and borrowing a concept from one domain and applying it somewhere unexpected.
Over the years, I have realised that this is where much of my own creativity lies. I am not always the person inventing something from scratch. But I am often the person who sees how two seemingly unrelated ideas can fit together.
Many useful innovations emerge this way. Someone notices how a model used in one industry might solve a problem in another. A scientific framework finds its way into business. A concept from history can help you deal with a problem you are struggling with today.
Being curious and open-minded are two foundational mindsets for improving synthesis.
Creativity does not always come from staring harder at the problem in front of you. Sometimes it comes from wandering widely, collecting ideas, and letting them quietly connect in your mind.
The world is full of ideas waiting to travel.
Synthesis is simply the ability to let them meet-in your mind.
